It’s easy to dream about the home you wish to live in but what are you practically doing to get there? Maybe it’s time to learn how to remodel on a budget.
Believe it or not, there are more deals out there than you thought possible. Finding them is the trick.
How to Save Money?
We’re not saving the best for last this time, but rather sharing the secrets with you right away!
The key to saving money on any home improvement or remodeling project is looking for it. The number one reason why customers overpay: they didn't do their research.
A customer sees a great deal, and impulsively buys it. Only to realize a few days down the road that they could have purchased elsewhere for a better price.
How to avoid this?
We are not encouraging you to go cheap on everything… the quality of products you choose to purchase (especially on a home improvement project) will show itself, one year, five years, or ten years down the road. Quality is more important than price: Don't buy the cheapest, at least not always.
Your goal when shopping for products is to find the best deal on the best product. It may end up costing twice as much as a cheaper alternative, but if it lasts four times as long it’s well worth it.
Research, Research, Research… Know what you want before you go and buy it. You can avoid the pitfall almost every homeowner falls into by simply being educated. As much as we would like to believe that every salesperson is honest and wishing you the best, that’s not always true.
Every situation and project is different, know what your project needs, and go shopping for that (nothing else).
Bottom Line: Find what you like, figure out what you need, research, and look for the best deal.
Where can you find these deals?
It’s as simple as a search engine search. Dig around you can find plenty of deals from local suppliers online. If you have visited a store and like the product but would like to price match simply enter the product name in Google followed by the city you are located in.
Example: If you are looking for this Engineered Hardwood by Dansk (that we carry) just type it’s name into Google… “Dansk Walnut Restoration Engineered Hardwood Portland” and find business’s that carry the product you are looking for.
If you don’t have a specific product that you are looking for visit Craigslist. You would be surprised how many products you can find on Craigslist, especially if you are looking for a small amount. Often there are left overs after a large project that need to be sold and the supplier or contractor is willing to sell the material at a steep discount (just to get rid of it).
How about everything that comes after purchasing product?
Landing a killer deal on product will do you no good if you don’t know what to do afterwards. Many homeowners find a great deal on product but end up spending a fortune to get it installed.
This is another area were you really need to do your research. You would be surprised how many times we have people contacting us asking us to redo a job that they paid a contractor to do but it didn't turn out the way they wanted.
Cheap is good, but if it ends up costing you double (because you have to redo it) it’s not very cheap anymore. In this case research is another one of your best friends. Know who your hiring before you sign the contract. Read customer reviews and ask around.
It’s much better to pay an extra dollar here and there and hire someone that you trust rather than having a horrific experience.
If you are still unsure about how to hire a contractor correctly read this blog post we wrote a few months back!
It’s time to be proud
Look around and find that awesome deal, ask around and hire the very best contractor, and finally reap your reward.
Saving hundreds of dollars on product and installation never felt as good. When you finally see the end result and you know you stayed within your budget without any chaos or worry.
